Teton Valley History

idaho2.jpg (7081 bytes)Teton Valley, Idaho, located on the "other side" of Jackson Hole and the Tetons, is home to the towns of Victor, Driggs, and Tetonia. Before the valley was home to settlers, Blackfeet Indians along with other western tribes passed through during their seasonal migrations. The mountain men discovered the area in the early 1800’s while trapping fur. It was during this time the area received its first name "Pierre’s Hole", after an Iriquios/French trapper. The first settlers didn’t arrive in the area until the early 1880’s. By the 1900’s there was thriving community in the valley. The Oregon Short Line Railroad was built in Driggs in 1912 and brought in visitors by the trainload to travel over the pass into Jackson to visit Teton and Yellowstone National Park. Victor prospered as the gateway community and hotels and restaurants popped up on the main street. When cars began to be more popular as a means of transportation Teton Valley became more of a farming community and less of a tourist stop. The valley remained that way until it was rediscovered in 1969 by the creators of the Grand Targhee Ski Area. Today the area is booming once again as people are realizing that the area offers endless outdoor activities such as skiing, biking, fishing and hiking. Grand Targhee Ski and Summer Resort boasts some of the best powder skiing in the country. People are finding that Teton Valley is a great place to live with its close proximity to Jackson and the parks and a natural beauty all of its own.
